John Counsell

John is a chartered architect and principal lecturer in Architectural Studies, in Cardiff School of Art and Design, at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He is engaged with colleagues within WIRAD (www.wirad.ac.uk/)  in: measuring the performance of heritage buildings; developing laser scanning of existing building stock for retrofit and BIM; researching non-destructive testing of new construction and existing buildings; digital performance simulation of buildings and environments; low cost prototyping and the IOT.

John was engaged in multi-disciplinary architectural practice for many years, and also ran a consultancy, from 1990 assisting Westbury Homes develop building (and site) information modelling. He then spent a decade at UWE Bristol both teaching and leading EU and other research projects. These included an Interreg project led by the Environment Agency, for public engagement in formulating and critiquing planning proposals via the web, using 3D modelling and contextual settings derived from the Environment Agency’s LiDAR 3D survey data.
