Dr Robert Hairstans undertakes research, innovation and knowledge exchange activities in order to deliver construction technologies for tomorrow’s communities within a circular economy. An Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University Dr Hairstans is head of the Centre for Offsite Construction + Innovative Structures (COCIS), part of the Institute for Sustainable Construction (ISC) and a Senior Lecturer within the School of Engineering and the Built Environment (SEBE). His specialist knowledge is in the field of timber technologies and engineering and he has spent his career adding value to the timber supply chain with an emphasis on engineered timber products and offsite (modular) construction.
Recently Dr Hairstans was principle investigator on the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) Offsite Skills project an industry and academic collaboration to tackle upskilling and diversification challenges in the sector. This project, in combination with other synergistic initiatives, has resulted in the creation of a limited liability Co-Op “Offsite HUB (Scotland)” community of practice and the publication of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) endorsed publication “Building Offsite: an introduction”. The track record of Dr Hairstans was a major contributor to the Edinburgh Napier University 2015 Queens Anniversary Prize for Innovation in Timber Construction and Wood Science.
